Why video stops when a Tesla shifts into Drive
By Lation, Model Y owner · Updated
Tesla pauses video on the center screen whenever the car isn't in Park. In Tesla Theater the picture stops and the sound keeps playing; in the web browser, videos freeze on their last frame. It's a deliberate restriction on the car's built-in video player, and no setting turns it off.
What happens, screen by screen
| Where | In Park | Out of Park |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Theater (Netflix, YouTube, Hulu…) | Plays | Video pauses, audio continues |
| Web browser video | Plays | Video freezes, audio continues |
| Rear screen (newer cars) | Plays | Keeps playing |
| Gigaplay | Plays | Keeps playing |
Tesla's own manual puts it plainly: "If you are streaming content on the touchscreen and you shift out of Park, the video pauses while audio continues to play."
Why it happens
The block is tied to Park, not to speed. Shifting into Drive with your foot on the brake is enough to stop video. Elon Musk's 2019 promise was to allow video while moving once full self-driving is approved by regulators, and that hasn't happened.
Tesla has also pulled back before. Games could be played while moving from late 2020 until regulators asked questions in 2021, and Tesla locked them to Park.
What still works out of Park
- Audio. YouTube, Theater apps and the browser keep their sound. Videos become podcasts.
- The browser itself. Web pages, maps and anything that isn't a video keep working. (In a few regions the browser is reportedly blocked in Drive entirely.)
- The rear screen on cars that have one.
- Gigaplay. It doesn't use the car's built-in video player, so the pause doesn't apply. Go to gigaplay.app, tap Open and scan the code, and YouTube keeps playing for your passenger.
Common fixes that don't work
- Foot on the brake in Drive: video still pauses. The block is about leaving Park.
- Full-screen sites and Theater wrappers: they change how a page looks, not which player it uses, so the video still pauses.
- Screen mirroring: some apps can show your phone's screen while moving, but encrypted apps like Netflix show a black screen. See Theater vs the browser vs screen mirroring.
