How to play Steam games on a Tesla
By Lation, Model Y owner · Updated
Yes, from your own PC. Tesla's built-in Steam is no longer offered on new cars and never came to the Model 3 or Model Y, but you can stream your whole Steam library from your gaming PC to the center screen: install Gigaplay for PC, type its code in the car's browser at gigaplay.app, and Steam Big Picture opens on the car's screen. Play with a PS5 controller connected to the car, parked or while driving (for passengers).
What happened to Tesla's Steam
- Steam (Beta) arrived in the 2022 Holiday Update, only for 2022 and newer Model S and Model X with the bigger gaming computer.
- In May 2024 Tesla started telling new Model S and X buyers that "your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games".
- The Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck never had it.
So for almost every Tesla, Steam in the car means streaming it from somewhere else. Cloud services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW only have the games they carry, and they now cap monthly hours (more in cloud vs your own PC). Your own PC already has your library.
How to play your Steam library in the car
On the gaming PC (once, about five minutes):
- On the PC, go to gigaplay.app/pc and download the installer.
- Run it. Windows may warn about an unknown publisher: choose More info, then Run anyway.
- It installs everything it needs (Gigaplay for PC, the open-source Sunshine streaming engine and a controller driver), sets itself up and shows a code.
In the car (once):
- Open the car's browser, go to gigaplay.app and tap Open.
- Open the Games tab and type the code.
- Your PC's library appears: Steam, your Epic and Xbox app games, and the desktop. Tap Steam.
From then on it's Games, then Steam. Steam Big Picture opens on the car's screen, and the PC shows a PlayStation controller to Steam, so the button prompts match your DualSense.
What you need
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| PC | Windows 10 or 11 with an NVIDIA, AMD or Intel graphics card, on and online |
| Network | Nothing to set up. The PC connects out, so no port forwarding or router settings |
| Car | A Tesla with the Intel Atom or AMD Ryzen media computer (which ones) |
| Controller | A PS5 DualSense paired with the car (how). The touchscreen works as a mouse too |
| Data | Up to 20 Mbps at 1080p60, about 9 GB an hour. It steps down on a weak signal instead of freezing |
Playing
- Quality starts at 1080p and 60 frames a second and follows the connection. It changes without a pause.
- The touchscreen is the mouse: tap to click, hold to right-click, drag to point, two fingers to scroll. Handy for launchers and menus.
- The menu (the corner button, or Create and Options held together) has Close game, which closes the game and takes you back to Big Picture, and End, which closes everything on the PC and puts its screen back.
- Your PC's monitor switches to the stream's size while you play and switches back when you press End.
- Online games with anti-cheat, like Fortnite, work as they do at your desk, because it is your desk's PC.
Questions
Does it work while driving?
Yes, for passengers. Gigaplay decodes the stream itself instead of using the car's video player, so it keeps going after the car leaves Park. The center screen is in the driver's view, so check the law where you are; more on that.
Which Steam games work?
The ones you can play with a controller, which is most of a Big Picture library. Games that need a keyboard work only as far as the touchscreen mouse gets you.
Is it free?
Yes. There's no subscription and no hourly limit; you're streaming a PC you already own.
Can I use Steam Link or Moonlight instead?
Steam Link has no app for the Tesla's browser. A do-it-yourself Moonlight setup can work, but it needs your own domain, port forwarding and HTTPS. See streaming PC games to a Tesla.
