Netflix, Hulu or Disney+ in a Tesla while driving
By Lation, Model Y owner · Updated
No website or app can play Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max or Prime Video on a Tesla's center screen while the car is moving. Those services are encrypted, and encrypted video can only play through the browser's built-in video player, which is the player Tesla pauses outside Park. Back-seat passengers can watch several of them on the rear screen of newer cars, and up front, YouTube works while driving with Gigaplay.
What plays where
| Service | Center screen, parked | Center screen, moving | Rear screen, moving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Yes, in Theater (up to 720p) | No | Yes |
| Hulu | Yes, in Theater | No | Yes |
| Disney+ | Yes, in Theater | No | Yes |
| Max, Prime Video | Yes, full screen in the browser | No | Not offered |
| YouTube | Yes | Yes, with Gigaplay | Yes |
Rear screens come on Model S and X (2021+), Model 3 (2024+), Model Y (2025+) and Cybertruck. Their app list is Theater apps only.
Why encryption decides it
Netflix-style services protect video with DRM. In a web browser, the standard for playing protected video extends the browser's media element: the decryption keys can only be attached to that element (MDN). Nothing else on the page can show the picture.
Tesla pauses exactly that element when the car leaves Park. So there's no way for a website to keep Netflix or Hulu playing on the center screen while moving. Getting around the encryption itself isn't an option either.
Screen-mirroring apps hit the same wall: their listings say Netflix, Prime Video and Hulu show a black screen when mirrored.
What passengers can watch instead
- Rear seats: Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and YouTube in Theater on the rear screen, if your car has one.
- Front seat: YouTube through Gigaplay, in up to 1080p. Go to gigaplay.app in the car's browser, tap Open and scan the code with your phone.
- Front seat, more: your own IPTV service (live channels, movies, series) and games from your PC, also through Gigaplay.
A Disney+ tip for when you're parked
If the Disney+ tile is missing from Theater, it was hidden in late 2023 for owners who had never opened it. Visiting disneyplus.com in the browser brings it back.
