Streaming PC games to a Tesla: cloud, Moonlight or your own PC

By Lation, Model Y owner · Updated

There are four ways to get PC games onto a Tesla's screen: Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW in the browser (Park only, with monthly hour limits), a do-it-yourself Moonlight setup (your own domain and port forwarding), or Gigaplay, which streams your own PC with one installer and a code and keeps playing while driving, for passengers. Tesla's built-in Steam is no longer offered on new cars.

Cloud gaming

Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW run games on their own servers and send video to the browser. Owners report Xbox Cloud Gaming working in the Tesla browser while parked; GeForce NOW needs workarounds. Neither lists the Tesla browser as supported. Both play through the browser's video player, which the car pauses as soon as it leaves Park, their libraries are the games each service carries, and both now limit monthly hours.

Moonlight and Steam Link

  • Steam Link has no version for the Tesla browser.
  • Moonlight connects to Sunshine on your PC. A community web client for Teslas, moonlight-web-stream-tsla, draws the picture itself and says it works in Drive. It needs your own domain, open ports on your router and an HTTPS certificate, and it's maintained by hobbyists.

Gigaplay

Gigaplay does the same kind of streaming without the network work:

  • On the PC: one installer from gigaplay.app/pc with Gigaplay for PC, Sunshine and a controller driver. It sets itself up and shows a code.
  • In the car: gigaplay.app, the Games tab, type the code once. Your library appears: Steam, Epic and Xbox app games, the desktop.
  • The connection: the PC connects out to Gigaplay's relay, so there's nothing to open on your router. Quality starts at 1080p and 60 frames a second and follows the signal.

Questions

Which is fastest to set up?

Cloud gaming, if the game you want is in the catalog and you're parked. For your own library, Gigaplay: one installer and a code.

Which works in a Model 3 or Model Y?

All of them run in the browser of a Tesla with the Intel Atom or AMD Ryzen media computer. The built-in Steam never came to the Model 3 or Y.

Is streaming my own PC safe?

Gigaplay's PC program only connects out, and when it installs Sunshine itself, Sunshine listens on the PC alone. Nothing is opened to the internet or your home network, and the car reaches the PC only with the code you typed.
